Good design tells a story

Sand inspireGood design tells a story and when I create for others, I try to relate what’s happening in their lives and what’s important to them in their spaces. I certainly encourage DIY designers to try for this personalization, too. This Extreme Makeover bedroom was for a woman who’s living by a new set of rules since a gunshot left her paralyzed. My design inspiration was the sand on a beach.

The gentle ridges in sand evoke serenity and calm, but they’re also a reminder that nature is always in motion, always changing the rules. I was able to create the wall structure in this picture using wire mesh, metal and plaster. It gave the room a really cool feature plus it helped reinforce the theme I wanted to communicate. Here are some more examples of design inspiration on the website.

[...] As I have said before, good design tells a story and I always encourage people to have something in their home decor and design that reflect what’s important to them. In this bedroom from an Extreme Makeover episode, I made the headboard, lamps and ladder out of branches indigenous to Arizona. It was a way of honoring the land and paying tribute to the family’s Navajo culture. More 10-second tips and Good design tells a story [...]

I just got done reading your news letter. My favorite outdoor room is Coastal Cool but also the Oriental Influence. I like the Coastal Cool because of the color, the flowers and the statue dog :) I like the Oriental Influence because of the swing chair. All the outdoor rooms are nice though. I would like to take something from each and put them in one room.

Interesting and inventive wall! Looks nice, perhaps a little cold. But that is of course all subjective taste. I am more of Oriental influence paired with IKEA kind of girl, as I guess you already have figured out. Glad the woman got a new bedroom.

Dearest Ty:

I have always wanted to tell you, your crew, and Sears how much you enrich my life with all that you do for people. I cry everytime I watch an episode of Extreme Home makeover with much happiness. I don’t know how you get all this and people together the way you do but I know that you are very special people and I’m so very proud to shop at Sears now. I tell the cashiers how good your program makes me feel. I wish everyone would watch this program as I do. I pray God Blesses you All and I’ve always prayed for the success of Sears and Kmart. I believe in America and that man is generally good. Thankyou so much for enriching my life with the good you do for others.
Very Sincerely
Ann M of Port Orange Florida
