Next stop: Philo, Illinois
Just got a minute here because I’m on the bus with the design team on our way to surprise the Montgomery family in Philo, Illinois, at their non-profit organization called “Salt and Light.” It’s a local, non-denominational ministry helping folks who are at or below the poverty line to meet their needs. Check out their website here. More later, gotta run!

Hi! Following the Philo build on line (when I can get to a working computer…), looks like the Montgomerys are really loved by their community, and Salt&Light sounds amazing–wish there were more places like that in areas of need. Can’t play on Facebook ’til I sync my (few) hours off with the FIOS’ guy’s work schedule, and get my new (finally!hooray!) laptop up & running to replace this antique (maybe the Smithsonian wolud be interested in something still running-just barely-Windows 98?) Hope to come visit y’all in the DC area soon… Hey, did I tell you about the Habitat build I went to back in April? LOVE that! Everyone should work on building a house some time–like trying to eat just one potato chip–can’t stop after just one…
Anyway, y’all stay safe and have fun, & thanx for the updates!

You are the best, the Montgomery family is very lucky. They deserve this home and the Salt and Light due over. I tried to get with the team many years back when it was with Doug, Frank and all the others. I have had several opportunities to decorate homes and offices, but to do what you do would be a dream come true. I live in Tolono, few miles from Philo. I just starting working on a seasonal job until Nov. and was hoping to get to see you all today, but was not able too. I signed up for a volunteer, but that didn’t work either.
Just want to tell you again, you and your crew make people smile.
Thanks

Ty it is just amazing the things that you the design team and ABC are doing with your show. I don’t watch reality TV much, but I am someone who likes to help others and I really am in awe of some of the things I see, and hear you doing. Don’t know why I am writing other than to say keep it up.
Kurt
Every time I have the opportunity to watch the amazing things done for others in need I am truly inspired! I’m a single mom and know the struggles in life, but none as great as I see when I watch the show. I would love to be involved on some level – everyone should lend a hand no matter how great or how small the amount (in whatever form) that may be. The meaning of brotherhood heartfelt! Let me know what I can do to carry the torch…
Hi Ty,
Marcus here, i did not know where to go to send you a message, so i thought i would drop you a line here, i am from the UK, and if your ever in my neck of the woods would like to buy you a beer!
cheers

Hey Mr Pennington
Me and my familiy love your program Extreme Makeover, going on a Norwegian TV-channel. Watched the program from Colorado about the Woodhouse family. Wonderful! There is something about you and your team friends and your eye for people that need somebodys help that really catches me. I am an editor of a newspaper in our ministry. See: http://www.fjaereposten.no (pdf´s of all editons on left side). Would it be possible to make some sort of an interview with you for this paper, about the important thing to help other people and the joy of helping others, that helping does good for both parts? That would be great. PEER
You guys are awesome! How you use your gifts and talents to turn heartache into blessing!
My soon to be 17 years old daughter is an energetic, tender-hearted girl who loves life and loves design (and I might add has a knack for it). Her dream job would be to be a designer/ helper on Extreme Home Makeover, to use her talents to make someone elses tough life more manageable. I realize it would be outlandish to even ask, (but then what you guys do is outlandish). To make a precious girl’s dream come true, what is the possibility of a strong, hardworking, very intelligent, loving girl, tagging along, even helping with the labor, with one of your designers for a day or a project, to see the inside workings of what you guys do… design changed lives? She has no idea I’m asking. I want her to know her dreams are important to me.
Very Sincerely,
Kathy Helfer
Kathy:
The best chance is for her to volunteer to help the builders on a particular show. Typically about a week before we show up in a town, the local news will start doing stories about us and calling for volunteers. Our producers work closely with the builders to make sure all the volunteers are in place by the time I arrive to yell “Good Morning!” So keep an eye on your local news or, if you’re interested in traveling to a location in a town other than your city, sign up for a Google Alert or some other way of being electronically notified using the key words Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. Thanks for asking!
I was so insipred that my husband and I are starting our own food, clothing and household items bank. Right now we will be working out of a nasty little shed with holes on the top and sides and no door. But, we are ready to rock. Thanks for that show….it was amazing. Do you know anyway that I could email the family for some tips and ideas?
Thanks again for you show. You guys do AMAZING things for people and encourage other people to do their part!!

Extreme Makeover always makes a great choice of deserving familes and I’m glad this family got their makeover – and anything to give Philo some positive press – it’s something this town needs. Lived here from 95 to 2002 – most UNFRIENDLY,UNINVITING town in Illinois. This place was nothing but a “good ole boys” club and gossiping women. I’m so GLAD to be gone from there. Maybe this will change the attitude of the “center of the universe”!
I absolutely loved this family! What they do for their community was amazing…so inspirational and moving. I hadn’t watched EM:HE for a while as I just couldn’t catch it (and with my DVR not working) so this was a good one and was very glad I didn’t miss it!
I also just have to say those kids are so blessed to have parents like this couple. Some may think why give up a good paying job and enough money to keep a house up and trade it for a place like Salt & Light, but those kids are learning so much more and are getting so much more out of life than just the latest gadget money can buy. We need more people like this out there to help those in need (and not to mention – raise their kids to have compassion) and I’m glad I was able to view this wonderful act of God’s love and be inspired by it!
Thank you, and those like you, for what you do for these wonderful people!
GBU!
Amy
