10-second tip: Stay dry naturally

RaincoatNatural dehumidifiers can keep furniture, clothes and other stored stuff from mildewing. For example, you can put charcoal briquettes in a can or jar with holes poked in the top and they’ll absorb moisture.

You can do the same thing with regular old chalk. A few sticks hanging in a pair of pantyhose or a mesh bag will dry things out nicely, too. There have been times when I wished someone would hang me a in a mesh bag! I guess my trusty raincoat will have to suffice.  More 10-second tips

10-second tip: Let your treasures work together

Blog Tip 6-10Make a strong first impression by grouping some of your favorite things. In this example, an ornate chair is paired with a storage console then topped with a carved round mirror. A ginger jar lamp and sculpted piece of art complete the interesting mix in front of the boldly painted orange wall. Eclectic, personal, stylish. That’s a pretty good mix! More 10-second tips

Singing with Sandi

When I heard that Sandi Thom was coming to play at our grand finale I was really psyched. I’d enjoyed “I Wish I Was A Punk Rocker” and I was glad when she sang it for us that night. Not much better than seeing a beautiful, talented woman wail on a harmonica and guitar (at the same time) and then sing like a bird while I’m standing so close I could touch her.

Unfortunately for Sandi I decided that I wanted to sing with her.  She indulged me with a cover of The Proclaimers “I’m Gonna Be” (another Scottish band!) and let me tell you, I would definitely walk 500 miles to sing with Sandi again. More posts about my visit to Scotland.

Somewhere over the rainbow

There was one more thing about the cricket match in Scotland that I’ll never forget and that’s this incredible rainbow that came out while we were playing. I thought these pics were worth sharing (and remembering)! Something is not cricket about cricket.

Something is not cricket about cricket

Long nights working on the kiln green project meant some tempers were rising. So I decided it’d be good to blow off some steam by arranging a game of cricket. Who cares that I don’t know a thing about cricket? It’ll be a blast! My crew vs. a local team.

I showed up in my Cubs jersey and cap and got laughed at. Not the most promising start. Then I was outfitted in some caterer or waiter-type outfit of white pants and a white sweater. They handed me a piece of wood called a wicket or something and told me to go out there and just hit the ball. I have no idea what happened next but things got a little chaotic.

I got what they call a golden duck which I immediately realized was a bad thing given that the other team ran and jumped on top of one another as if they’d won the World Series.  My team didn’t give me too hard a time…unless you consider not speaking to me the rest of the shoot as a hard time. Just kidding. It was fun to learn the sport. Well, sort of. I can’t say I know anything more about cricket than I did when I started, but it was fun to play with the guys. Video of my cricket catastrophe. More posts about my visit to Scotland.
